Surveys

Planning controls are now particularly strong for the protection of wildlife, habitats and biodiversity. There is extensive planning and environmental legislation covering both UK and international policies including a great many directives arising out of the European Union.

Legislation also protects many UK animals and plant species and those, which are most often affected by developments, include:

	Badgers: Protected by the Protection of Badgers Act 1992.
	Bats: Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
	Birds: Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
	Reptiles: Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
	Great-crested Newts: Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
	Water Voles: Protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

For many of the above species it is an offence, (special penalties apply), to kill, disturb or injure them. Marsh Environmental specialises in surveys which include Birds, Bats, Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians, Invertebrates, Plants and Trees.
